Stone massage: hot and cold stones

Professional work with heat and cold: from therapeutic and sports massage to deep relaxation and premium SPA procedures.

About the course

Stone therapy is a professional method of working with heat and cold, where temperature becomes as much a tool of the massage therapist as pressure, movement and touch.

Hot basalt stones are used for deep warming and relaxation of the tissues, while cold marble ones are used for a brief toning and contrasting effect. Alternating temperatures makes it possible to obtain different physiological responses and to select the contact depending on the tasks and the condition of the client.

Professional stone therapy is not simply heating stones and placing them on the body. On the course you learn to understand the physiological action of temperature, manage heat and cold and use the stone as an extension of your own hands — for gliding, compression, and localised and pinpoint work.

Temperature can be applied as a standalone method or integrated into classic, therapeutic, sports and relaxing massage, work with muscular tension and trigger points, as well as SPA and wellness procedures.

So after the course you gain not just another massage protocol, but a new professional tool that you can use across almost all areas of your work.

Massage is an in-demand profession in Cyprus that’s easy to enter, and the skill stays with you in any country. Why learn massage →

Why should a massage therapist master Hot & Cold Stones?

At MAWS the core training is built around four areas of work:

  • Swedish / classic massage → TISSUESWork with the muscles and soft tissues.
  • Relaxing massage → NERVOUS SYSTEMWorking with a person's state through touch.
  • Lymphatic drainage massage → FLUIDSWork with the lymphatic system and the movement of fluid in the tissues.
  • Stone therapy → TEMPERATUREWork with temperature: the contrast of hot and cold.

This knowledge is mutually complementary and allows a massage therapist not merely to follow a ready protocol, but to understand the task and consciously choose an approach for the specific client.

Temperature — another tool of the therapist. Heat and cold make it possible to complement manual work with temperature contact: heat — to prepare and relax the tissues before deeper work, localised heat or cold contact — in therapeutic massage, work with muscular tension and trigger points. In sports massage the choice of temperature depends on the condition of the tissues, the stage of the load and the tasks of the procedure. What matters is not simply memorising where to place a stone, but understanding which physiological response you want to obtain and when the contact is appropriate.

The stone becomes an extension of your hands. The heat of the stone is transferred to the therapist's palms, and the movements of the hands and stones flow smoothly into one another in a single continuous massage. With a correctly selected temperature, the transition is so natural that the client stops distinguishing where they are touched by a warm hand and where by a heated stone. This continuity of touch creates an unusual sensory experience and promotes deep relaxation.

Create a procedure the client remembers. A complete Hot & Cold Stone Massage combines touch, heat, temperature contrast, flowing movements and aromatherapy — a familiar massage turns into a special SPA ritual with a high perceived value. For a massage therapist, new skills are an opportunity to give clients more, increase the value of the work and create additional reasons to return and recommend you (the average session price in Cyprus is around €90).

Use the technique exactly as you need to. You do not have to carry out the full protocol every time: individual elements of stone therapy can be applied where they are genuinely needed — to work on a zone locally, to prepare the tissues with heat before manual work, to use temperature in therapeutic or sports massage, or to create a complete relaxing SPA procedure. One specialisation — many options for application.

What you’ll learn

  • Understand the physiology of heat and coldHow the body and tissues respond to temperature contact, how the action of heat and cold differs and in which situations each method is applied.
  • Manage temperatureHow to heat and cool the stones correctly, control the temperature, choose the intensity and duration of contact and work safely with contrast.
  • Select and prepare the stonesWhy basalt is used for hot work and marble for cold, which sizes and shapes suit different zones and techniques, how to clean and disinfect the stones.
  • Use the stone as a massage toolGliding, compression, localised and pinpoint work, placing the stones and smoothly combining hand and stone work.
  • Apply temperature in therapeutic massageHow to integrate heat and cold into work with muscular tension and trigger points and combine temperature with manual techniques within the massage therapist's competence.
  • Integrate Hot & Cold Stones into other types of massageThe principles for choosing temperature contact depending on the type of massage, the condition of the tissues and the goals of the procedure.
  • Deliver a full Hot & Cold Stone MassageThe sequence of a complete procedure: preparing the equipment and the client, work with hot and cold stones, combining stones and manual techniques, finishing the session.
  • Combine stone therapy with aromatherapyAromatherapy protocols that complement relaxation and SPA procedures and enhance the sensory component of the massage. Separate attention is paid to safety, indications and contraindications.

What you’ll be able to do after the course

After the training, temperature will become another tool in your professional work. You will be able to:

  • Deliver a full Hot & Cold Stone Massage as a standalone procedure
  • Work safely with heat, cold and temperature contrast
  • Use the stones as an extension of your own hands
  • Apply gliding, compression, localised and pinpoint techniques
  • Use temperature contact in classic and therapeutic massage
  • Integrate Hot & Cold Stones into work with muscular tension and trigger points
  • Use the principles of temperature contact in sports massage
  • Create deep relaxation and premium SPA procedures
  • Combine stone therapy with aromatherapy
  • Adapt the application of heat and cold to the tasks and condition of the specific client

You gain not simply another technique, but an additional professional tool that broadens the possibilities of your hands and makes your work more varied and individual.
